Born in London, Cathy Henderson grew up in Staffordshire, Belfast and County Down before moving to Paris and then to Dublin to study at the National College of Art and Design from where she graduated with an MA in 1993. She has since exhibited in the UK, Ireland and Northwest Canada and has worked on community art projects with children and adults in Belfast, Dublin, New York and the Canadian Arctic.
Recent group shows include Eigse, Carlow Arts Festival; Portrait Ireland and the Mermaid Open Submission Show in Bray. Corporate and private clients include Guiness, Bank of Ireland and RTE and her work is in numerous private and public collections including National Bank of Canada, Queens University.
In 1996 she worked as artist in residence in the Lyric Theatre Belfast producing a critically successful large series of work documenting actors and stage crew during live performances. Her interest in documenting people using drawing and painting has extended to using audio recordings in tandem with visual imagery. In 1998 she co-produced and directed an audio documentary which was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and received a Sony award nomination.
In addition to her interest in portraiture and figurative work Cathy also makes landscape centred work drawing particular inspiration from coastal areas in Wicklow, Clare, Mayo and Donegal.
Cathy is currently embarking on a series of painted and audio portraits featuring manual and immigrant workers in Wicklow and Dublin.
